Here is the trick. Every card in your hand is worth something, and right now it is yours. Keep it hidden and it is just money. But the second you give it to the city, everyone at the table sees it. It stops being yours. It becomes something the whole table remembers, whether Carthage makes it through the night or not, and you never get it back. So here is the question this game asks you, over and over, all night. Are you helping, or are you hiding?

The game runs in six Acts. Trouble comes five times: a storm, a hunger, a war, a debt. Each time, you decide in secret how much of your own money to give the city, and everyone flips at once. Then, in Act Six, Rome is at the gates, and no card can save you. Only people can.
At the Siege, each player says STAND or LEAVE, out loud, in turn, with the whole table watching. Say STAND and you bet everything you have on the city. Say LEAVE and you walk out with what you kept. Carthage lives or dies on that count. Betrayal is allowed. It is just never quiet.
The Council game: 3 to 7 players, every friend is temporary. Cato's Directive: 4 or 6 players in two teams, Carthage against Rome, and you cannot see your own partner's cards. One box, both.
